A photography session capturing your new bundle(s) of joy after they have entered the world is such a special experience for a new parent. This blog article is here to advise you on when is the best to book in a newborn photography session as well as discussing why I am a photographer you can trust to capture these intimate family moments!
What age should my baby be during the session?
As a professional photographer I have captured endless memories for families with babies throughout their first year and the coming years as they grow into a curious toddler and beyond! In my experience I always recommend that you book a newborn photography shoot within the first two weeks of their life, 5-10 days being the sweet spot!. Now this may sound early after their arrival into the world but at this precious time babies are often sleepy, calm and all squishy, which are the perfect conditions for capturing memories. This means that we can create beautiful set ups including things like cute little buckets or baskets as well as capturing family photos of you altogether , and some lovely snuggly posed ones on the plainer blankets too. TOO CUTE!
Although you can have photography sessions past this point of time, babies tend to be more awake and curious about their surroundings which often causes them to become wiggly or uncomfortable. However, due to this new level of activity you can capture incredibly intimate portraits as your baby’s eyes will be open and exploring the world. So if you have missed the squishy sleepy newborn stage- DON’T PANIC! – We can still create some gorgeous photos for you!
When is the best time to book?
The best time to book in your photography shoot is before your bundle of joy has entered the world, often 2-3 months in advance. All I need is your due date until they are born and then once your little bundle of joy has arrived we can book in a final session between the 5-10 day mark of your babies life! <3
What do I need to wear and bring to our session?
I would always suggest to get involved in the newborn shoot and take the time to get some family photos of you all together- it is so important to get these and amazing for your child to have to keep too. Because believe me- there’ll be so many future photos without mum or dad in because someone will be behind the camera themselves!
To get the best photos, I would recommend that you wear plain neutral clothing for instance black, white or cream colours- but I am happy to discuss with you what I think will look best, and happy to advise on your outfit choices too if you want to send them over in advance! 🙂
I always suggest trying to avoid too bright colours, patterned colours or clothing with big logos if possible as it can look distracting and take away the focus from the most important people- which is you guys and your new bundle of joy!!
Although I have a lot of options of props to use during your shoot, if there is a sentimental item that you would like to be included in your photos such a baby blanket or a special soft toy please do bring it along!
What are the advantages of a newborn shoot in a studio?
In my cosy little home studio in Leicester I have a variety of props that can be used while capturing your memories such as buckets, baskets, cute little baby hats and a variety of baby wraps and lets not forget the different types of backdrops too!
As my studio is home to all of my equipment I have everything I need to make your memories unique and timeless! Imagine trying to take all this stuff to different locations- LOGISTICAL NIGHTMARE!! So you can come along and relax- have a nice cuppa and sit on the sofa here while I work on getting the cutest photos possible for you!

After your session you will be invited back to the studio for a viewing session where we can watch a little slideshow of all the images I have chosen for you, and then we can decide what you would like to take away to keep forever!
I have prints, wonderful wall art options, bespoke albums to keep and also digital images on USB or via download link- if you want to be able to keep using them again and again after you have left! This is not a pressure sale type viewing (We do not like that here!!).
However I will help you as we go along through your choosing process and give a little friendly advice along the way to help you find the best options that fit perfectly with what you want!
